  Thethreedayswere,asshehadforetold,busyenough。IhadthoughtalltheroomsatThornfieldbeautifullycleanandwellarranged;butitappearsIwasmistaken。Threewomenweregottohelp;andsuchscrubbing,suchbrushing,suchwashingofpaintandbeatingofcarpets,suchtakingdownandputtingupofpictures,suchpolishingofmirrorsandlustres,suchlightingoffiresinbedrooms,suchairingofsheetsandfeather—bedsonhearths,Ineverbeheld,eitherbeforeorsince。Adèleranquitewildinthemidstofit:thepreparationsforcompanyandtheprospectoftheirarrival,seemedtothrowherintoecstasies。ShewouldhaveSophietolookoverallher“toilettes,”asshecalledfrocks;tofurbishupanythatwere“passées,”andtoairandarrangethenew。Forherself,shedidnothingbutcaperaboutinthefrontchambers,jumponandoffthebedsteads,andlieonthemattressesandpiled—upbolstersandpillowsbeforetheenormousfiresroaringinthechimneys。Fromschooldutiesshewasexonerated:Mrs。Fairfaxhadpressedmeintoherservice,andIwasalldayinthestoreroom,helping(orhindering)herandthecook;learningtomakecustardsandcheese—cakesandFrenchpastry,totrussgameandgarnishdesert—dishes。
