  “Buttheseniggersweren’tgoingtoletmewalkthroughandawaylikethat。Theystartedakindofbowingdanceaboutme,andsortofpressedmetotakeapathwaythatlaythroughthetrees。Itwascleartometheydidn’ttakemeforaBritishcitizen,whateverelsetheythoughtofme,andformyownpartIwasneverlessanxioustoownuptotheoldcountry。

  “You’dhardlybelieveit,perhaps,unlessyou’refamiliarwithsavages,butthesepoormisguided,ignorantcreaturestookmestraighttotheirkindofjossplacetopresentmetotheblessedoldblackstonethere。BythistimeIwasbeginningtosortofrealisethedepthoftheirignorance,anddirectlyIseteyesonthisdeityItookmycue。Istartedabaritonehowl,’wow-wow,’verylongononenote,andbeganwavingmyarmsaboutalot,andthenveryslowlyandceremoniouslyturnedtheirimageoveronitssideandsatdownonit。Iwantedtositdownbadly,fordiving-dressesain’tmuchwearinthetropics。Or,toputitdifferentlike,they’reasighttoomuch。Ittookawaytheirbreath,Icouldsee,mysittingontheirjoss,butinlesstimethanaminutetheymadeuptheirmindsandwerehardatworkworshippingme。AndIcantellyouIfeltabitrelievedtoseethingsturningoutsowell,inspiteoftheweightonmyshouldersandfeet。
