  “OfcourseyoumustunderstandthatIwasagreenhornatdiving。

  Noneofusweredivers。We’dhadtomuckaboutwiththethingtogetthewayofit,andthiswasthefirsttimeI’dbeendeep。Itfeelsdamnable。Yourearshurtbeastly。Idon’tknowifyou’veeverhurtyourselfyawningorsneezing,butittakesyoulikethat,onlytentimesworse。Andapainovertheeyebrowshere——splitting——andafeelinglikeinfluenzainthehead。Anditisn’tallheaveninyourlungsandthings。Andgoingdownfeelslikethebeginningofalift,onlyitkeepson。Andyoucan’tturnyourheadtoseewhat’saboveyou,andyoucan’tgetafairsquintatwhat’shappeningtoyourfeetwithoutbendingdownsomethingpainful。Andbeingdeepitwasdark,letalonetheblacknessoftheashesandmudthatformedthebottom。

  Itwaslikegoingdownoutofthedawnbackintothenight,sotospeak。

  “Themastcameuplikeaghostoutoftheblack,andthenalotoffishes,andthenalotofflappingredseaweed,andthenwhackIcamewithakindofdullbangonthedeckoftheOceanPioneer,andthefishesthathadbeenfeedingonthedeadroseaboutmelikeaswarmoffliesfromroadstuffinsummertime。Iturnedonthecompressedairagain——forthesuitwasabitthickandmackintosheryafterall,inspiteoftherum——andstoodrecoveringmyself。Itstruckcoolishdownthere,andthathelpedtakeoffthestuffinessabit。
