  Beyondthepeasantshomesteadstherewasaslopedowntotheriver,sosteepandprecipitousthathugestonesjuttedoutbarehereandtherethroughtheclay。Downtheslope,amongthestonesandholesdugbythepotters,ranwindingpaths;bitsofbrokenpottery,somebrown,somered,laypiledupinheaps,andbelowtherestretchedabroad,level,brightgreenmeadow,fromwhichthehayhadbeenalreadycarried,andinwhichthepeasants’

  cattlewerewandering。Theriver,three-quartersofamilefromthevillage,rantwistingandturning,withbeautifulleafybanks;beyonditwasagainabroadmeadow,aherdofcattle,longstringsofwhitegeese;then,justasonthenearside,asteepascentuphill,andonthetopofthehillahamlet,andachurchwithfivedomes,andatalittledistancethemanor-house。

  “It’slovelyhereinyourparts!“saidOlga,crossingherselfatthesightofthechurch。“Whatspace,ohLord!“

  JustatthatmomentthebellbeganringingforserviceitwasSaturdayevening。Twolittlegirls,downbelow,whoweredraggingupapailofwater,lookedroundatthechurchtolistentothebell。
