Thatwhateverappearstobetheproperobjectofgratitude,appearstodeservereward;andthat,inthesamemanner,whateverappearstobetheproperobjectofresentmentappearstodeservepunishmentTous,therefore,thatactionmustappeartodeservereward,whichappearstobetheproperandapprovedobjectofthatsentiment,whichmostimmediatelyanddirectlypromptsustoreward,ortodogoodtoanother。Andinthesamemanner,thatactionmustappeartodeservepunishment,whichappearstobetheproperandapprovedobjectofthatsentimentwhichmostimmediatelyanddirectlypromptsustopunish,ortoinflicteviluponanother。
Thesentimentwhichmostimmediatelyanddirectlypromptsustoreward,isgratitude;thatwhichmostimmediatelyanddirectlypromptsustopunish,isresentment。
Tous,therefore,thatactionmustappeartodeservereward,whichappearstobetheproperandapprovedobjectofgratitude;
as,ontheotherhand,thatactionmustappeartodeservepunishment,whichappearstobetheproperandapprovedobjectofresentment。
Toreward,istorecompense,toremunerate,toreturngoodforgoodreceived。Topunish,too,istorecompense,toremunerate,thoughinadifferentmanner;itistoreturnevilforevilthathasbeendone。
