Bysittingatthebedsideofhispatients，andprayingthattheymightbemagnetised，theywentoffintoastateverysimilartothatofthepersonswhofellunderthenoticeofM。dePuysegur。Inthecourseoftime，averyconsiderablenumberofmagnetisers，acknowledgingBarbarinfortheirmodel，andcalledafterhimBarbarinists，appearedindifferentparts，andwerebelievedtohaveeffectedsomeremarkablecures。InSwedenandGermany，thissectoffanaticsincreasedrapidly，andwerecalledspiritualists，todistinguishthemfromthefollowersofM。dePuysegur，whowerecalledexperimentalists。TheymaintainedthatalltheeffectsofAnimalMagnetism，whichMesmerbelievedtobeproduciblebyamagneticfluiddispersedthroughnature，wereproducedbythemereeffortofonehumansoulactinguponanother；thatwhenaconnexionhadoncebeenestablishedbetweenamagnetiserandhispatient，theformercouldcommunicatehisinfluencetothelatterfromanydistance，evenhundredsofmiles，bythewill！Oneofthemthusdescribedtheblessedstateofamagneticpatient:——“Insuchamananimalinstinctascendstothehighestdegreeadmissibleinthisworld。Theclairvoyantisthenapureanimal，withoutanyadmixtureofmatter。Hisobservationsarethoseofaspirit。HeissimilartoGod。
