  AtlasttheCommissionerspublishedtheirreport,whichwasdrawnupbytheillustriousandunfortunateBailly。Forclearnessofreasoningandstrictimpartialityithasneverbeensurpassed。Afterdetailingthevariousexperimentsmade,andtheirresults,theycametotheconclusionthattheonlyproofadvancedinsupportofAnimalMagnetismwastheeffectsitproducedonthehumanbody——thatthoseeffectscouldbeproducedwithoutpassesorothermagneticmanipulations-thatallthesemanipulations,andpasses,andceremoniesneverproduceanyeffectatallifemployedwithoutthepatient’sknowledge;andthatthereforeimaginationdid,andanimalmagnetismdidnot,accountforthephenomena。

  ThisreportwastheruinofMesmer’sreputationinFrance。HequittedParisshortlyafter,withthethreehundredandfortythousandfrancswhichhadbeensubscribedbyhisadmirers,andretiredtohisowncountry,wherehediedin1815,attheadvancedageofeighty-one。
