  Thegamehadbeenalongone,andathalf-pastnine,whensuppercamein,wehadeachofusafewpiecesremaining。“Whatwillyoutakeforsupper,DrSkinner?”saidMrsSkinnerinasilveryvoice。

  Hemadenoanswerforsometime,butatlastinatoneofalmostsuperhumansolemnity,hesaid,first,“Nothing。”andthen“Nothingwhatever。”

  Byandby,however,IhadasensecomeovermeasthoughIwerenearertheconsummationofallthingsthanIhadeveryetbeen。Theroomseemedtogrowdark,asanexpressioncameoverDrSkinner’sface,whichshowedthathewasabouttospeak。Theexpressiongatheredforce,theroomgrewdarkeranddarker。“Stay。”heatlengthadded,andIfeltthathereatanyratewasanendtoasuspensewhichwasrapidlybecomingunbearable。“Stay——Imaypresentlytakeaglassofcoldwater——andasmallpieceofbreadandbutter。”

  Ashesaidtheword“butter“hisvoicesanktoahardlyaudiblewhisper;thentherewasasighasthoughofreliefwhenthesentencewasconcluded,andtheuniversethistimewassafe。
