  \"Thegreatspeedatwhichtheatmosphericcurrentsmove,\"saidBearwarden,\"coupledwiththecomparativelownessofthemountainchainsandtheslightobstructiontheyoffertotheirpassage,mustdistributetherainverythoroughly,notwithstandingthegreatunbrokenareaofthecontinents。TherecanbenosuchstateofthingshereasexistsinthewesternpartofSouthAmerica,wheretheAndesaresohighthatanyeast—boundclouds,incrossingthem,areshovedupsofarintoacoldregionthatallmoisturetheymayhavebroughtfromthePacificiscondensedintorain,withwhichpartsofthewesternslopearedeluged,whilecloudsfromtheAtlantichavecomesofartheyhavealreadydispersedtheirmoisture,inconsequenceofwhichtheregionjusteastoftheAndesgetslittleifanyrain。Itisbadforacontinenttohaveitshighmountainsneartheoceanfromwhichitshouldgetitsrain,andgoodforittohavethemsetwellback。\"
