  Withoutawaitingafullreturnoflight,thetravellersproceededontheirway,andhadgonesomethingoverahundredyardswhenAyrault,whowasmarchingsecond,suddenlygraspedBearwarden,whowasinfront,andpointedtoajet—blackmassstraightahead,andaboutthirtyyardsfromapoolofwarmwater,fromwhichacloudofvapourarose。Thetopoftheheadwasaboutsevenfeethigh,andthelengthofthebodyexceededthirtyfeet。Thesixlegslookedasstrongassteelcables,andwereaboutafootthrough,whileahuge,bonyproboscisninefeetinlengthprecededthebody。Thiswascarriedhorizontallybetweentwoandthreefeetfromtheground。Presentlyalargegroundslothcametothepooltodrink,lappingupthewateratthesidesthathadpartlycooled。Inaninstanttheblackarmoredmonsterrusheddowntheslopewiththespeedofanineteenth—centurylocomotive,andseemedaboutasformidable。Theslothturnedinthedirectionofthesound,andforamomentseemedparalyzedwithfear;itthenstartedtorun,butitwastoolate,forthenextsecondtheenormouslyexaggeratedant——forsuchitwas——overtookit。Thehugemandibleshearsthatwhenclosedhadformedtheproboscis,snappedviciously,takingoffthesloth\'slegsandthencuttingitsbodytoslivers。Theexecutionwasfinishedinafewseconds,andtheponderousinsectcarriedbackabouthalftheslothtoitshiding—place,whereitleisurelydevouredit。
