  Oneafternoon,atlowwater,Mr。Isbister,ayoungartistlodgingatBoscastle,walkedfromthatplacetothepicturesquecoveofPentargen,desiringtoexaminethecavesthere。HalfwaydowntheprecipitouspathtothePentargenbeachhecamesuddenlyuponamansittinginanattitudeofprofounddistressbeneathaprojectingmassofrock。Thehandsofthismanhunglimplyoverhisknees,hiseyeswereredandstaringbeforehim,andhisfacewaswetwithtears。

  HeglancedroundatIsbister’sfootfall。Bothmenweredisconcerted,Isbisterthemoreso,and,tooverridetheawkwardnessofhisinvoluntarypause,heremarked,withanairofmatureconviction,thattheweatherwashotforthetimeofyear。
