  MRS。COREYreturnedwithherdaughtersintheearlydaysofOctober,havingpassedthreeorfourweeksatIntervaleafterleavingBarHarbour。TheyweresomewhatbrownerthantheywerewhentheylefttowninJune,buttheywerenototherwisechanged。Lily,theelderofthegirls,hadbroughtbackanumberofstudiesofkelpandtoadstools,withaccessoryrocksandrottenlogs,whichshewouldneverfinishupandnevershowanyone,knowingtheslightnessoftheirmerit。Nanny,theyounger,hadreadagreatmanynovelswithakeensenseoftheirinaccuracyasrepresentationsoflife,andhadseenagreatdealoflifewithasadregretforitsdifferencefromfiction。Theywerebothnicegirls,accomplished,well—dressedofcourse,andwellenoughlooking;

  buttheyhadmetnooneattheseasideorthemountainswhomtheirtastewouldallowtoinfluencetheirfate,andtheyhadcomehometotheoccupationstheyhadleft,withnohopesandnofearstodistractthem。
