  IngoingdownfromthechurchtotheSmallHouseLilyDalehadalltheconversationtoherself。Duringsomeportionofthewaythepathwasonlybroadenoughfortwoperson,andherMajorGrantlywalkedbyLily’sside,whileGracefollowedthem。Thentheyfoundtheirwayintothehouse,andLilymadeherlittlespeechtohermotheraboutcatchingthemajor。’Yes,mydear,IhaveseenMajorGrantlybefore,’saidMrsDale。

  Shemightknowthatherfatherwasinnocent;buttheworldthoughtdifferently,andshe,herbrothersandsister,andhermotherandherpoorfather,mustbendtotheworld’sopinion。Ifthosedangerousjoyshadmeantanything,theymustbetakenasmeaningnothingmore。
