  WhenMr。Wardendied,somefouryearspreviously,Roscoewasaladofabouttwenty,justhomefromcollege,fullofdreamsofgreatservicetotheworldinscience,expectingtogobackforhisdoctor’sdegreenextyear。Insteadofwhichtheoldermanhadsuddenlydroppedbeneaththeburdenhehadcarriedwithsuchvisiblehappinessandpride,suchunknownanxietyandstrainingeffort;andtheyoungeronehadtostepintotheharnessonthespot。
