Thriftisthereallyromanticthing;economyismoreromanticthanextravagance。HeavenknowsIforonespeakdisinterestedlyinthematter;forIcannotclearlyremembersavingahalf-pennyeversinceIwasborn。Butthethingistrue;economy,properlyunderstood,isthemorepoetic。Thriftispoeticbecauseitiscreative;
wasteisunpoeticbecauseitiswaste。Itisprosaictothrowmoneyaway,becauseitisprosaictothrowanythingaway;

Itisnotself-evident(forinstance),thateventhehabitofstandinguprightwastheonlypathofhumanprogress。
Theremighthavebeenaquadrupedalcivilization,inwhichacitygentlemanputonfourbootstogotothecityeverymorning。
Ortheremighthavebeenareptiliancivilization,inwhichherolleduptotheofficeonhisstomach;itisimpossibletosaythatintelligencemightnothavedevelopedinsuchcreatures。
Allwecansayisthatmanasheiswalksupright;andthatwomanissomethingalmostmoreuprightthanuprightness。
Andthesecondpointisthis:thatuponthewholeweratherpreferwomen(nay,evenmen)towalkupright;sowedonotwastemuchofournoblelivesininventinganyotherwayforthemtowalk。
