  Joshuawasneitheryoungnorspirited。Andtheweathercouldnothavebeenmuchworse。Thethreedays’stormhadsoakedeverything,andtheclay-bottomedpuddleswerenearkintoquicksands。AsthelighthousewagondescendedthelongslopeatthesouthernendofthevillageandbeganthecircleoftheinnerextremityofEastboroBackHarbor,Sethrealizedthathisjourneywastobeahardone。Therain,drivenbythenortheastwind,cameoffthewaterinblindinggusts,andthewavesintheharborweretippedwithwhite。Also,althoughthetidewasalmostatitslowest,streaksofseaweedacrosstheroadshowedwhereithadreachedthatforenoon,andprophesiedevenagreaterfloodthatnight。HeturnedhisheadandgazeduptheharbortowhereitnarrowedandbecamePounddugSlough。
