  Thefirsttheorywhichsuggestsitselfandwhichonthesurfaceseemsratherattractiveisthatofspiritualism,whichmaybeextendeduntilitisscarcelydistinguishablefromthetheosophicaltheoryandotherreligioussuppositions。Itassumestherevivalofspirits,theexistenceofdiscarnateorothersuperiorandmoremysteriousentitieswhichsurroundus,interestthemselvesinourfate,guideourthoughtsandouractionsand,aboveall,knowthefuture。Itis,aswerecognizedwhenspeakingofghostsandhantedhouses,averyacceptabletheory;andanyonetowhomitappearscanadoptitwithoutdoingviolencetohisintelligence。Butwemustconfessthatitseemslessnecessaryandperhapsevenlessclearlyprovedinthisregionthaninthat。

  Itstartsbybeggingthequestion:withouttheinterventionofdiscarnatebeings,thespiritualistssay,itisimpossibletoexplainthemajorityofthepremonitoryphenomena;thereforewemustadmittheexistenceofthesediscarnatebeings。Letusgrantitforthemoment,fortobegthequestion,whichismerelyanindefensibletrickofthesuperficiallogicofourbrain,doesnotnecessarilycondemnatheoryandneithertakesawayfromnoraddstotherealityofthings。Besides,asweshallinsistlater,theinterventionornon-interventionofthespiritsisnotthepointatissue;andthecruxofthemysterydoesnotliethere。
