  Ramierezhimself——round-whiskeredandSanchoPanza-likeinbuild——

  welcomedtheeditorwithfat,perfunctoryurbanity。Thefondaandallitcontainedwasathisdisposicion。

  Thesenoracoquettishlybewailed,inrisingandfallinginflections,hislongabsence,hisinfidelityandgeneralperfidiousness。Trulyhewasgrowinggreatinwritingoftheaffairsofhisnation——hecouldnolongerseehishumblefriends!Yetnotlongago——trulythatveryweek——therewastheheadimpresorofDonPancho’simprentahimselfwhohadbeenthere!

  Tohissurprise,Mr。Greysawthatshehadbeenridingbareback,andfromherdiscreethaltatthatdistancehehalfsuspectedASTRIDE!Hiseffusivecomplimentstothemotheronthisexhibitionofskillweresincere,forhewasstruckbythegirl’sfearlessness。

  Butwhenbothhorseandrideratlaststoodbeforehim,hewasspeechlessandembarrassed。
