  The\"portfolios\"werefound,shortlyafterEmilyDickinson’sdeath,byhersisterandonlysurvivinghousemate。Mostofthepoemshadbeencarefullycopiedonsheetsofnote-paper,andtiedinlittlefascicules,eachofsixoreightsheets。Whilemanyofthembearevidenceofhavingbeenthrownoffatwhiteheat,stillmorehadreceivedthoughtfulrevision。Thereisthefrequentadditionofratherperplexingfoot-notes,affordinglargechoiceofwordsandphrases。Andinthecopieswhichshesenttofriends,sometimesoneform,sometimesanother,isfoundtohavebeenused。Withoutimportantexception,herfriendshavegenerouslyplacedatthedisposaloftheEditorsanypoemstheyhadreceivedfromher;andthesehavegiventheobviousadvantageofcomparisonamongseveralrenderingsofthesameverse。

  Thehandwritingwasatfirstsomewhatlikethedelicate,runningItalianhandofoureldergentlewomen;butassheadvancedinbreadthofthought,itgrewbolderandmoreabrupt,untilinherlatestyearseachletterstooddistinctandseparatefromitsfellows。Inmostofherpoems,particularlythelaterones,everythingbywayofpunctuationwasdiscarded,exceptnumerousdashes;andallimportantwordsbeganwithcapitals。Theeffectofapageofhermorerecentmanuscriptisexceedinglyquaintandstrong。Thefac-similegiveninthepresentvolumeisfromoneoftheearliertransitionperiods。Althoughthereisnowhereadate,thehandwritingmakesitpossibletoarrangethepoemswithgeneralchronologicaccuracy。

  Likeimpressionistpictures,orWagner’sruggedmusic,theveryabsenceofconventionalformchallengesattention。InEmilyDickinson’sexactinghands,theespecial,intrinsicfitnessofaparticularorderofwordsmightnotbesacrificedtoanythingvirtuallyextrinsic;andherversesallshowastrangecadenceofinnerrhythmicalmusic。Linesarealwaysdaringlyconstructed,andthe\"thought-rhyme\"appearsfrequently,——appealing,indeed,toanunrecognizedsensemoreelusivethanhearing。
