  AsitwasirreconcilablewithhiswholecourseandcharacterthatheshouldcarryBebelleoffinstate,orreceiveanycomplimentsorcongratulationsonthatfeat,hedevotedthenextdaytogettinghistwoportmanteausoutofthehousebyartfulnessandstealth,andtocomportinghimselfineveryparticularasifheweregoingtorunaway,——except,indeed,thathepaidhisfewdebtsinthetown,andpreparedalettertoleaveforMadameBouclet,enclosingasufficientsumofmoneyinlieuofnotice。Arailwaytrainwouldcomethroughatmidnight,andbythattrainhewouldtakeawayBebelletolookforTheophileinEnglandandathisforgivendaughter’s。
