ShakespearandtheBritishPublicIhaverejectedMrHarris’sviewthatShakespeardiedbroken-heartedof\"thepangsoflovedespised。\"IhavegivenmyreasonsforbelievingthatShakespeardiedgame,andindeedinastateoflevitywhichwouldhavebeenconsideredunbecominginabishop。ButMrHarris’sevidencedoesprovethatShakespearhadagrievanceandaveryseriousone。Hemighthavebeenjiltedbytendarkladiesandbeennonetheworseforit;buthistreatmentbytheBritishPublicwasanothermatter。TheidolatrywhichexasperatedBenJonsonwasbynomeansapopularmovement;and,likeallsuchidolatries,itwasexcitedbythemagicofShakespear’sartratherthanbyhisviews。
HewaslaunchedonhiscareerasasuccessfulplaywrightbytheHenryVItrilogy,aworkofnooriginality,depth,orsubtletyexcepttheoriginality,depth,andsubtletyofthefeelingsandfanciesofthecommonpeople。ButShakespearwasnotsatisfiedwiththis。WhatistheuseofbeingShakespearifyouarenotallowedtoexpressanynotionsbutthoseofAutolycus?ShakespeardidnotseetheworldasAutolycusdid:hesawit,ifnotexactlyasIbsendid(foritwasnotquitethesameworld),atleastwithmuchofIbsen’spowerofpenetratingitsillusionsandidolatries,andwithallSwift’shorrorofitscrueltyanduncleanliness。
