  Itshotfromthegroundforaspace,straight,strong,andsuperb,andthenbustintoninesplendidbranches,eachatreeinitself,allgrowingsymmetricallyfromtheparenttrunk,andcastingagratefulshadowunderwhichalltheinhabitantsofthetinyvillagemighthavegathered。

  Itwasnotaloneitssize,itsbeauty,itssymmetry,itsdensityoffoliage,thatmadeitthegloryoftheneighborhood,butthelowgrownofitsbranchesandtheextra-ordinarybreadthofitsshade。

  Passers-byfromtheadjacenttownswerewonttohitchtheirteamsbythewayside,crawlthroughthestumpfenceandwalkacrossthefields,foranearerviewofitsmagnificence。

  Oneman,indeed,wasknowntodrivebythetreeeverydayduringthesummer,andlifthishattoit,respectfully,eachtimehepassed;

  buthewasapoetandhisintellectwasnotgreatlyesteemedinthevillage。

  Theelmwasalmostasbeautifulinoneseasonasinanother。

  Asforthebirds,theymadeitafashionablesummerresort,themostcommodiousandattractiveinthewholecountry;withnolimittotheaccommodationsforthoseofagregariousturnofmind,likingtheadvantagesofselectsocietycombinedwithcountryair。

  Intheautumnithelditsown;forwhentheotherelmschangedtheirgreentodullertints,thenooningtreeputonagownofyellow,andstoodoutagainstthefarbackgroundofsombrepinewoodsabrilliantmassofgoldandbrown。
