Theylivedonthevergeofavaststonylevel,upheavedsofarabovethesurroundingcountrythatitsvagueoutlines,viewedfromthenearestvalley,seemedamerecloud-streakrestinguponthelesserhills。Therushandroaroftheturbulentriverthatwasheditseasternbasewerelostatthatheight;thewindsthatstrovewiththegiantpinesthathalfwayclimbeditsflanksspenttheirfurybelowthesummit;for,atvariancewithmostmeteorologicalspeculation,aneternalcalmseemedtoinvestthisserenealtitude。
ThefewAlpineflowersseldomthrilledtheirpetalstoapassingbreeze;rainandsnowfellalikeperpendicularly,heavily,andmonotonouslyoverthegranitebowldersscatteredalongitsbrownexpanse。AlthoughbyactualmeasurementaninconsiderableelevationoftheSierranrange,andamereshoulderofthenearestwhite-facedpeakthatglimmeredinthewest,itseemedtoliesonearthequiet,passionlessstars,thatatnightitcaughtsomethingoftheircalmremoteness。
Thearticulateutteranceofsuchalocalityshouldhavebeenawhisper;alaughorexclamationwasdiscordant;andtheordinarytonesofthehumanvoiceonthenightofthe15thofMay,1868,hadagrotesqueincongruity。
Inthethickdarknessthatclothedthemountainthatnight,thehumanfigurewouldhavebeenlost,orconfoundedwiththeoutlinesofoutlyingbowlders,whichatsuchtimestookuponthemselvesthevaguesemblanceofmenandanimals。Hencethevoicesinthefollowingcolloquyseemedthemoregrotesqueandincongruousfrombeingtheapparentexpressionofanuprightmonolith,tenfeethigh,ontheright,andanothermassofgranite,that,reclining,peepedovertheverge。

Thevaguehorizonofdarkness,thatafewfeetfromthelanternstillencompassedthem,gavenoindicationoftheirprogress,untiltheirfeetactuallytrodtherudeplanksandthatchthatformedtheroofoftheirhabitation;fortheircabinhalfburrowedinthemountain,andhalfclung,likeaswallow’snest,tothesideofthedeepdeclivitythatterminatedthenorthernlimitofthesummit。
Haditnotbeenforthewindlassofashaft,acoilofrope,andafewheapsofstoneandgravel,whichweretheonlyindicationsofhumanlaborinthatstonyfield,therewasnothingtointerruptitsmonotonousdeadlevel。And,whentheydescendedadozenwell-wornstepstothedooroftheircabin,theyleftthesummit,asbefore,lonely,silent,motionless,itslongleveluninterrupted,baskinginthecoldlightofthestars。

Withoutapparentlyheedingthispotentialceremony,Ruthremainedleaningagainstthedoorway,lookinguponthenight,thebulkofwhoseprofundityandblacknessseemedtobegatheredbelowhim。
Thevaultabovewassereneandtranquil,withafewlargefar-
spacedstars;theabyssbeneath,untroubledbysightorsound。
