  Ontheirreturntothefonda,theyfoundMasterManueltoofargonewithaguardiente,andageneralanimositytotheaverageAmericano,tobeofanyservice。Sotheyworkedalone,withpen,ink,andpaper,inthestuffy,cigarrito-cloudedbackroomofthefonda。Itwasmidnight,twohoursafterConchohadstarted,thatMiguelclappedspurstohishorseforthevillageofTresPinos,withanapplicationtoGovernorMicheltorenaforagranttothe\"RanchooftheRedRocks\"comfortablybestowedinhispocket。
