  butwegotinstilledintoustheideathatshewasanawfulbadwoman,somethingmoreterribleeventhanadrunkenman,andonewhosepresencewastobefearedandfledfrom。Thereweretwoothergirlsinthehutwithher,alsoaprettylittlegirl,whocalledher\"Auntie\",andwithwhomwewerenotallowedtoplay——fortheywereallbad;

  whichpuzzledusasmuchaschild-mindscanbepuzzled。

  Wecouldn’tmakeouthoweverybodyinonehousecouldbebad。

  Weusedtowonderwhythesebadpeopleweren’thuntedawayorputingaoliftheyweresobad。Andanotherthingpuzzledus。Slippingoutafterdark,whenthebadgirlshappenedtobesingingintheirhouse,we’dsometimesrunagainstmenhangingroundthehutbyonesandtwosandthrees,listening。

  Theyseemedmysterious。Theyweremostlygoodmen,andweconcludedtheywerelisteningandwatchingthebadwomen’shousetoseethattheydidn’tkillanyone,orstealandrunawaywithanybadlittleboys——ourselves,forinstance——whoranoutafterdark;

  which,aswewereinformed,thosebadpeoplewerealwaysonthelookoutforachancetodo。

  WeweretoldinafteryearsthatoldPeterMcKenzie(arespectable,married,hard-workingdigger)wouldsometimesstealupoppositethebaddoorinthedark,andthrowinmoneydoneupinapieceofpaper,andlistenrounduntilthebadgirlhadsungthe\"BonnieHillsofScotland\"
