  AGirlCaptainWhenWilburcameondeckthemorningafterthesinkingofthebarkhewassurprisedtofindtheschoonerunderwayagain。WilburandCharliehadberthedforwardduringthatnight——Charliewiththehands,WilburintheCaptain’shammock。ThereasonforthischangeofquartershadbeenfoundinaperemptoryorderfromMoranduringthedog-watchtheprecedingevening。

  ShehadlookedsquarelyatWilburfromunderherscowl,andhadsaidbrieflyandinafinecontraltovoice,thathehadforthefirsttimenoted:\"Iberthaft,inthecabin;youandtheChinamanforward。Understand?\"

  Theywerebarefoot。Noneofthemworemorethantwogarments——thejeansandtheblouse。TheywerethelowesttypeofmenWilburhadeverseen。Thefaceswerethoseofahigherorderofanthropoidapes:thelowerportion——jaws,lips,andteeth——salient;thenostrilsopeningatalmostrightangles,theeyestinyandbright,theforeheadseamedandwrinkled——unnaturallyold。Theirgeneralexpressionwasofsimiancunningandaferocitythatwasutterlydevoidofcourage。

  Andindeedthedeadmonsterprovedaveritabletreasure-trove。Bytheendofthedayhehadbeentriceduptotheforemast,andallhandsstrainingatthewindlasshadraisedthemightyheadoutofthewater。TheChinamendescendeduponthesmooth,blackbody,theirbarefeetslidingandslippingateverystep。Theyheldonbyjabbingtheirknivesintothehideasglacier-climbersdotheirice-picks。Theheadyieldedbarrelafterbarrelofoilandafairquantityofbone。Theblubberwastakenaboardthejunk,mincedupwithhatchets,andrunintocasks。
