  SIR,——IamhonouredwithyourletterofMay8。Thatwhichyoumentiontohavewritteninthewinterprecedingnevercametohand。IreturnyoumythanksforthecommunicationsrelativetotheWesterncountry。WhenwereflecthowlongwehaveinhabitedthosepartsofAmericawhichliebetweentheAlleghaney&theocean,thatnomonumenthaseverbeenfoundinthemwhichindicatedtheuseofironamongits’aboriginalinhabitants,thattheywereasfaradvancedinarts,atleast,astheinhabitantsontheothersidetheAlleghaney,agooddegreeofinfidelitymaybeexcusedastothenewdiscoverieswhichsupposeregularfortificationsofbrickworktohavebeeninuseamongtheIndiansonthewatersoftheOhio。

  Intrenchmentsofearththeymightindeedmake:butbrickismoredifficult。Theartofmakingitmayhaveprecededtheuseofiron,butitwouldsupposeagreaterdegreeofindustrythanmeninthehunterstateusuallypossess。IshouldliketoknowwhetherGeneralParsonshimselfsawactualbricksamongtheremainsoffortification。
