  FollowingwithwonderfulpromptitudethedirectionsofIvanhoe,andavailingherselfoftheprotectionofthelargeancientshield,whichsheplacedagainstthelowerpartofthewindow,Rebecca,withtolerablesecuritytoherself,couldwitnesspartofwhatwaspassingwithoutthecastle,andreporttoIvanhoethepreparationswhichtheassailantsweremakingforthestorm。Indeedthesituationwhichshethusobtainedwaspeculiarlyfavourableforthispurpose,because,beingplacedonanangleofthemainbuilding,Rebeccacouldnotonlyseewhatpassedbeyondtheprecinctsofthecastle,butalsocommandedaviewoftheoutworklikelytobethefirstobjectofthemeditatedassault。Itwasanexteriorfortificationofnogreatheightorstrength,intendedtoprotectthepostern-gate,throughwhichCedrichadbeenrecentlydismissedbyFront-de-Buf。Thecastlemoatdividedthisspeciesofbarbicanfromtherestofthefortress,sothat,incaseofitsbeingtaken,itwaseasytocutoffthecommunicationwiththemainbuilding,bywithdrawingthetemporarybridge。Intheoutworkwasasallyportcorrespondingtotheposternofthecastle,andthewholewassurroundedbyastrongpalisade。Rebeccacouldobserve,fromthenumberofmenplacedforthedefenceofthispost,thatthebesiegedentertainedapprehensionsforitssafety;andfromthemusteringoftheassailantsinadirectionnearlyoppositetotheoutwork,itseemednolessplainthatithadbeenselectedasavulnerablepointofattack。
