  Theyhadshortswordsbytheirsides,andquarter-stavesintheirhands,andGurthcouldnowobservethatallsixworevisors,whichrenderedtheiroccupationamatterofnoquestion,evenhadtheirformerproceedingsleftitindoubt。

  ``Thirtyzecchinsofmyownproperty,’’answeredGurth,doggedly。

  Alightwasprocuredaccordingly,andtherobberproceededtoexaminethepurse。Theotherscrowdedaroundhim,andeventwowhohadholdofGurthrelaxedtheirgraspwhiletheystretchedtheirneckstoseetheissueofthesearch。Availinghimselfoftheirnegligence,byasuddenexertionofstrengthandactivity,Gurthshookhimselffreeoftheirhold,andmighthaveescaped,couldhehaveresolvedtoleavehismaster’spropertybehindhim。

  Butsuchwasnopartofhisintention。Hewrenchedaquarter-stafffromoneofthefellows,struckdowntheCaptain,whowasaltogetherunawareofhispurpose,andhadwellnighrepossessedhimselfofthepouchandtreasure。Thethieves,however,weretoonimbleforhim,andagainsecuredboththebagandthetrustyGurth。

  ``Knave!’’saidtheCaptain,gettingup,``thouhastbrokenmyhead;andwithothermenofoursortthouwouldstfaretheworseforthyinsolence。
