Theprisonerwasdressedinafilthybrownwoollencloak,andhisheadwascoveredwithagreasyandalmostblacktarbooshhehadtheappearanceofhavingsleptonadust-heap。Thisbeggarlyoutsidewasatokenofrepentanceandhumiliation。
Suleimanwasbroughtbeforeme,andheimmediatelyrushedforwardandknelttokissmyfeet,exhibitingatthesametimeconsiderableemotion;
whichsurprisedme,ashewasnotoriousasastern,hard-heartedKurd。
Isaidafewwordstohim,explainingthathemustnotthinkmeimpenetrableifIdoubtedhissincerity,asIhadbeenalreadydeceived,afterhavingshownhimmuchkindness;yetthesametimeIdidnotwishtoexertseverity,ifIcouldwinhimtoobediencebygoodadvice。
Suleimanalwaysremainedfaithfulfromthatmoment,andbecameadependableofficer。IofferedhimafreepardonifhewouldswearupontheKoranfidelitytotheKhedive。Shouldhedeceiveme,andbecomearebelafterthis,heknewtheconsequences。
Suleimannowdeclared,andsworeupontheKoran,thathehadactedonlyuponordershehadreceivedfromAbouSaood。Itwashewho,inspiteofmywrittencommandthatthesheikWerdellashouldbespared,hadorderedtwoofhisslavestotakehimfromtheFabbozareeba,andtocuthisthroat。
BothWat-el-MekandSuleiman,aslatevakeelsofAbouSaood,sworetotheirwrittenevidence,towhichtheyattachedtheirsealsinthepresenceofwitnesses,thatAbouSaoodhadgivenorderstohisvakeelstoharrythecountryandtocaptureslavesandcattle;thatnoneofthepeopleemployedbyhimreceivedwagesinmoney,butthattheywereinvariablypaidinslaves,valuedatacertainsum。”AlltheoppositionthatIhadmetwithhadbeencausedbyAbouSaood。”
