  including65girlsandwomen,80children,and10men。ThegovernorofFashoda,whomIthushadcaughtintheactofkidnappingslaves,wasthepersonwho,afewweeksbefore,hadassuredmethattheslavetradewassuppressed,asthetradersdarednotpasshisstationofFashoda。Therealfactwas,thatthisexcellentexampleoftheSoudanmadeaconsiderablefortunebylevyingatolluponeveryslavewhichthetraders’boatsbroughtdowntheriver;thisheputintohisownpocket。
