  SOMEOFMYEARLYTEACHERS

  IhadintendedthattherecitationofFridaylastshouldbefollowedbyafewpartingwordstomyclassandanyfriendswhomighthappentobeinthelecture-room。ButIlearnedontheprecedingeveningthattherewasanexpectation,adesire,thatmyfarewellshouldtakeasomewhatdifferentform;andnottodisappointthewishesofthosewhomIwasanxioustogratify,Imadeupmymindtoappearbeforeyouwithsuchhastypreparationasthescantytimeadmitted。

  Therearethreeoccasionsuponwhichahumanbeinghasarighttoconsiderhimselfasacentreofinteresttothoseabouthim:whenheischristened,whenheismarried,andwhenheisburied。Everyoneisthechiefpersonage,thehero,ofhisownbaptism,hisownwedding,andhisownfuneral。

  Thereareotheroccasions,lessmomentous,inwhichonemaymakemoreofhimselfthanunderordinarycircumstanceshewouldthinkitpropertodo;whenhemaytalkabouthimself,andtellhisownexperiences,infact,indulgeinamoreorlessegotisticmonologuewithoutfearorreproach。

  IthinkImayclaimthatthisisoneofthoseoccasions。Ihavedeliveredmylastanatomicallectureandheardmyclassreciteforthelasttime。Theywishtohearfrommeagaininalessscholasticmoodthanthatinwhichtheyhaveknownme。Willyounotindulgemeintellingyousomethingofmyownstory?

  Thisisthethirty-sixthCourseofLecturesinwhichIhavetakenmyplaceandperformedmydutiesasProfessorofAnatomy。FormorethanhalfofmytermofofficeIgaveinstructioninPhysiology,afterthefashionofmypredecessorsandinthemannerthengenerallyprevalentinourschools,wherethephysiologicallaboratorywasnotanecessarypartoftheapparatusofinstruction。ItwaswithmyheartyapprovalthattheteachingofPhysiologywasconstitutedaseparatedepartmentandmadeanindependentProfessorship。Beforemytime,Dr。WarrenhadtaughtAnatomy,Physiology,andSurgeryinthesamecourseofLectures,lastingonlythreeorfourmonths。Astheboundariesofscienceareenlarged,newdivisionsandsubdivisionsofitsterritoriesbecomenecessary。IntheplaceofsixProfessorsin1847,whenIfirstbecameamemberoftheFaculty,IcounttwelveupontheCataloguebeforeme,andIfindthewholenumberengagedintheworkofinstructionintheMedicalSchoolamountstonolessthanfifty。

  SinceIbeganteachinginthisschool,theaspectofmanybranchesofsciencehasundergoneaveryremarkabletransformation。ChemistryandPhysiologyarenolongerwhattheywere,astaughtbytheinstructorsofthattime。Wearelookingforwardtothesynthesisofneworganiccompounds;ourartificialmadderisalreadyinthemarket,andtheindigo-raisersarenowfearingthattheircropwillbesupplantedbythemanufacturedarticle。Inthelivingbodywetalkoffuelsuppliedandworkdone,inmovement,inheat,justasifweweredealingwithamachineofourowncontrivance。

  Butwhilemanyofthescienceshavesochangedthattheteachersofthepastwouldhardlyknowthem,ithasnotbeensowiththebranchI
