  DuringallthistimeshehadheardfromCrawfordatleastonceaweek。Hewouldhavewrittenoftenerthanthat,hadshepermittedit。Andinspiteofherdeterminationsobravelyexpressedintheirinterviewoverthetelephone,shehadwrittenhimmorethantheonelettershehadpromised。Inthatletter——herfirst——shetoldhimtheexactsituationthereathome;ofherdiscoverythatheruncleswereintrouble,thatthesmall,buttothemprecious,businesstheyhadconductedsolongwasindanger,andofherdeterminationtogiveupschoolandremainatSouthHarnisswhere,sheknew,shewasneeded。Thenshewentontotellofherstillgreaterdiscovery,thatinsteadofbeingayoungwomanofindependentmeans,shewasandalwayshadbeendependentuponthebountyofheruncles。

  AndHamiltonandCompany’sbusinesswasreviving。Eventheskepticscouldseethesigns。TherevivalbeganbeforethesummerresidentsarrivedinSouthHarniss,butafterthelatterbegantocomeandthecottagestoopen,itwasoninearnest。JohnKeithhelpedtogiveititsfirstbigstart。Mrs。WyethwrotehimofMary’sleavingherschoolworktogototherescueofShadrachandZoeth,andthegirl’spluckanduncomplainingacceptanceofthetasksheconsideredsetforhermadeKeith’seyestwinklewithadmirationashereadtheletter。ThefamilycameearlytoSouthHarnissandthisyearhecamewiththem。OneofhisfirstactsafterarrivalwastostrolldowntothevillageandenterHamiltonandCompany’sstore。Maryandthepartnerswerethere,ofcourse。Heshookhandswiththemcordially。
