  Crawforddidnotlaughatthephotographs。Hewasayounggentlemanofconsiderablediscretionandhedidnotsmile,notevenatCaptainShad’shands,theleftwithfingersseparatedandclutchingakneeasiftokeepitfromshaking,therightlaidwoodenlyuponagorgeouslyboundparlor-tablecopyof“Lucille。“Insteadoflaughinghepraisedtheoriginalsofthepictures,talkedreminiscentlyofhisownvisitinSouthHarniss,andfinallyproducedfromhispocketbookasmallphotographicprint,whichhelaiduponthetablebesidetheothers。
