  Zoeth,althoughtheCaptain’sseafaringlanguagewasatrialtohisgentle,churchlysoul,agreedwithhispartneronthemainpoint。

  Hisexperiencewiththeothersexhadnotbeensuchastowarrantfurtherexperiment。SoIsaiahwashiredandhadbeencookandstewardattheSouthHarnisshomeformanyyears。Buthemadeitapracticetoasserthisindependenceatfrequentintervals,although,asamatteroffact,hewouldnomorehavedreamedofreallyleavingthanhisfriendsandemployerswouldofdischarginghim。Mr。Chasewasaspermanentafixtureinthathouseastheship’schronometerinthedining-room;andthatwasscrewedtothewall。

  “Ipresumelikely,“hintedZoeth,“youandme’llhavetogivetheJudgesomesortofananswerprettysoon,won’twe?He’llbewantin’toknowaforelong。“

  “Know?Knowwhat?“
