OnFriday,August10th,allthechosenpersonsassembledatthebishop’spalace:theyrangedthemselvesintheappointedorder,andturnedtheirstepstothecathedral,whichwascloseby。Whentheyarrivedthere,theytooktheplacesassignedtheminthechoir,andthechoristersimmediatelybegantochantafuneralserviceinEnglishandaccordingtoProtestantrites。Atthefirstwordsofthisservice,whenhesawitwasnotconductedbyCatholicpriests,Bourgoinleftthecathedral,declaringthathewouldnotbepresentatsuchsacrilege,andhewasfollowedbyallMary’sservants,menandwomen,exceptMelvilleandBarbeMowbray,whothoughtthatwhateverthetongueinwhichoneprayed,thattonguewasheardbytheLord。Thisexitcreatedgreatscandal;butthebishoppreachednonetheless。
Thesermonended,theheraldkingwenttoseekBourgoinandhiscompanions,whowerewalkinginthecloisters,andtoldthemthatthealmsgivingwasabouttobegin,invitingthemtotakepartinthisceremony;buttheyrepliedthatbeingCatholicstheycouldnotmakeofferingsatanaltarofwhichtheydisapproved。Sotheheraldkingreturned,muchputoutattheharmonyoftheassemblybeingdisturbedbythisdissent;butthealms-offeringtookplacenolessthanthesermon。Then,asalastattempt,hesenttothemagain,totellthemthattheservicewasquiteover,andthataccordinglytheymightreturnfortheroyalceremonies,whichbelongedonlytothereligionofthedead;andthistimetheyconsented;butwhentheyarrived,thestaveswerebroken,andthebannersthrownintothegravethroughtheopeningthattheworkmenhadalreadyclosed。
Then,inthesameorderinwhichithadcome,theprocessionreturnedtothepalace,whereasplendidfuneralrepasthadbeenprepared。Byastrangecontradiction,Elizabeth,who,havingpunishedthelivingwomanasacriminal,hadjusttreatedthedeadwomanasaqueen,hadalsowishedthatthehonoursofthefuneralbanquetshouldbefortheservants,solongforgottenbyher。But,asonecanimagine,theseillaccommodatedthemselvestothatintention,didnotseemastonishedatthisluxurynorrejoicedatthisgoodcheer,but,onthecontrary,drownedtheirbreadandwineintears,withoutotherwiserespondingtothequestionsputtothemorthehonoursgrantedthem。Andassoonastherepastwasended,thepoorservantsleftPeterboroughandtooktheroadbacktoFotheringay,wheretheyheardthattheywerefreeatlasttowithdrawwhithertheywould。
Theydidnotneedtobetoldtwice;fortheylivedinperpetualfear,notconsideringtheirlivessafesolongastheyremainedinEngland。
Theythereforeimmediatelycollectedalltheirbelongings,eachtakinghisown,andthuswentoutofFotheringayCastleonfoot,Monday,13thAugust,1587。
Bourgoinwentlast:havingreachedthefarthersideofthedrawbridge,heturned,and,Christianashewas,unabletoforgiveElizabeth,notforhisownsufferings,butforhismistress’s,hefacedabouttothoseregicidewalls,and,withhandsoutstretchedtothem,saidinaloudandthreateningvoice,thosewordsofDavid:
“LetvengeanceforthebloodofThyservants,whichhasbeenshed,O
LordGod,beacceptableinThysight“。Theoldman’scursewasheard,andinflexiblehistoryisburdenedwithElizabeth’spunishment。
