Nextday,Bothwellhaughlefthishighlands,andcamedown,disguised,intotheplain,furnishedwithanorderofadmissionfromtheArchbishopofSt。Andrewstoahousewhichthisprelate——who,asoneremembers,hadfollowedthequeen’sfortunestothelastmoment——hadatLinlithgow。Thishouse,situatedinthemainstreet,hadawoodenbalconylookingontothesquare,andagatewhichopenedoutintothecountry。Bothwellhaughentereditatnight,installedhimselfonthefirstfloor,hungblackclothonthewallssothathisshadowshouldnotbeseenfromwithout,coveredthefloorwithmattressessothathisfootstepsmightnotbeheardonthegroundfloor,fastenedaracehorsereadysaddledandbridledinthegarden,hollowedouttheupperpartofthelittlegatewhichledtotheopencountrysothathecouldpassthroughitatagallop,armedhimselfwithaloadedarquebuse,andshuthimselfupintheroom。
