Theywerefurnished,notonlywithrobes,themeasureforwhich,likethatofthesuit,hadbeentakenfromMaryFleming,butalsowithallthenecessariesforawoman’stoilet。Thequeenwasastonished:itwaslikebeinginafairycastle。

Nextmorningthequeenwasawakenedbythesoundoftrumpetsandbugles:ithadbeendecidedthedaybeforethatsheshouldsetoutthatdayforHamilton,wherereinforcementswerelookedfor。Thequeendonnedanelegantriding-habit,andsoon,mountedonRosabelle,appearedamidherdefenders。Theshoutsofjoyredoubled:herbeauty,hergrace,andhercouragewereadmiredbyeveryone。MaryStuartbecameherownselfoncemore,andshefeltspringupinheragainthepoweroffascinationshehadalwaysexercisedonthosewhocamenearher。Everyonewasingoodhumour,andthehappiestofallwasperhapsLittleWilliam,whoforthefirsttimeinhislifehadsuchafinedressandsuchafinehorse。

Onseeingthelieoftheground,theEarlofArgyllimmediatelycomprehendedtheimportanceofoccupyingthisvillage,and,turningtoLordSeyton,heorderedhimtogallopoffandtrytoarrivetherebeforetheenemy,whodoubtless,havingmadethesameobservationasthecommanderoftheroyalforces,wassettinginmotionatthatverymomentaconsiderablebodyofcavalry。
