  ThroughtheglassshesawthelongslopeofCannonHill,withthebeaconatthetopandCaptainMayo’shousenearit。Themainroadwasdesertedsaveforonefigure,thatofherlatecaller。Hewasmountingthehillinlongstrides。

  Shewatchedhimgainthecrestandpassoveritoutofsight。Thensheshiftedtheglasssothatitpointedtowardthespotbeyondthecurveofthehill,wherethetopofathickgroupofsilver-leafshidtheparsonage。AbovethetreetopsglistenedthewhitesteepleoftheRegularchurch。Iftheministerwentstraighthomeshecouldnotseehim。Butunderthosesilver-leafswasthebeginningoftheshortcutacrossthefieldswhereDidamahadseenMr。EllerywalkingonthepreviousSunday。

  Annabelputdowntheglassand,heedlessofherfather’scalls,satthinking。Theministerhaddeliberatelydeceivedher。Morethanthat,hehadgonetoconsiderabletroubletoavoidobservation。

  Keziahwasgettingworriedaboutherparson。Notconcerninghispopularitywithhiscongregation。Shehadlongsinceceasedtoworryaboutthat。Theyoungminister’splaceinhispeople’sregardwasnowassured,theattendancewasincreasing,andtheRegularchurchwasnowonafirmerfooting,financiallyandsocially,thanithadbeeninyears。EvenMrs。RogersandLaviniaPepperhadceasedtocriticise,exceptaspertainedtounimportantincidentals,andwerenowamongtheloudestofthepraisechanters。

  AndasCaptainZebMayosaid:“WhenDidamaandLavinystopsfault-

  findin’,themillennium’ssonighportafelleroughttobeoverhaulin’hissaintuniform。“
