  appointuntoyouakingdom,asmyFatherhathappointedtome,thatyoumayeatanddrinkatmytableinmykingdom,andsitonthronesjudgingthetwelvetribesofIsrael。“BywhichitismanifestthatthekingdomofChristappointedtohimbyhisFatherisnottobebeforetheSonofManshallcomeinglory,andmakehisApostlesjudgesofthetwelvetribesofIsrael。Butamanmayhereask,seeingthereisnomarriageinthekingdomofheaven,whethermenshalltheneatanddrink。Whateatingthereforeismeantinthisplace?ThisisexpoundedbyourSaviourwherehesaith,“Labournotforthemeatwhichperisheth,butforthatmeatwhichendurethuntoeverlastinglife,whichtheSonofManshallgiveyou。“*3SothatbyeatingatChrist’stableismeanttheeatingofthetreeoflife;thatistosay,theenjoyingofimmortality,inthekingdomoftheSonofMan。Bywhichplaces,andmanymore,itisevidentthatourSaviour’skingdomistobeexercisedbyhiminhishumannature。

  Again,heistobekingthennootherwisethanassubordinateorvicegerentofGodtheFather,asMoseswasinthewilderness,andasthehighpriestswerebeforethereignofSaul,andasthekingswereafterit。ForitisoneofthepropheciesconcerningChristthathebelike,inoffice,toMoses:“Iwillraisethemupaprophet,“saiththeLord,“fromamongsttheirbrethrenlikeuntothee,andwillputmywordsintohismouth“;*andthissimilitudewithMosesisalsoapparentintheactionsofourSaviourhimself,whilsthewasconversantonearth。ForasMoseschosetwelveprincesofthetribestogovernunderhim;sodidourSaviourchoosetwelveApostles,whoshallsitontwelvethronesandjudgethetwelvetribesofIsrael:

  andasMosesauthorizedseventyelderstoreceivetheSpiritofGod,andtoprophesytothepeople,thatis,asIhavesaidbefore,tospeakuntotheminthenameofGod;soourSaviouralsoordainedseventydisciplestopreachhiskingdomandsalvationtoallnations。AndaswhenacomplaintwasmadetoMosesagainstthoseoftheseventythatprophesiedinthecampofIsrael,hejustifiedtheminitasbeingsubservientthereintohisgovernment;soalsoourSaviour,whenSt。Johncomplainedtohimofacertainmanthatcastoutdevilsinhisname,justifiedhimtherein,saying,“Forbidhimnot,forhethatisnotagainstusisonourpart。“*2

  Again,ourSaviourresembledMosesintheinstitutionofsacraments,bothofadmissionintothekingdomofGodandofcommemorationofhisdeliveranceofhiselectfromtheirmiserablecondition。AsthechildrenofIsraelhadforsacramentoftheirreceptionintothekingdomofGod,beforethetimeofMoses,theriteofcircumcision,whichrite,havingbeenomittedinthewilderness,wasagainrestoredassoonastheycameintotheLandofPromise;soalsotheJews,beforethecomingofourSaviour,hadariteofbaptizing,thatis,ofwashingwithwaterallthosethat,beingGentiles,embracedtheGodofIsrael。ThisriteSt。JohntheBaptistusedinthereceptionofallthemthatgavetheirnamestotheChrist,whomhepreachedtobealreadycomeintotheworld;andourSaviourinstitutedthesameforasacramenttobetakenbyallthatbelievedinhim。

  ForwhatcausetheriteofbaptismfirstproceededisnotexpressedformallyintheScripture,butitmaybeprobablythoughttobeanimitationofthelawofMosesconcerningleprosy;whereintheleprousmanwascommandedtobekeptoutofthecampofIsraelforacertaintime;afterwhichtime,beingjudgedbythepriesttobeclean,hewasadmittedintothecampafterasolemnwashing。Andthismaythereforebeatypeofthewashinginbaptism,whereinsuchmenasarecleansedoftheleprosyofsinbyfaitharereceivedintotheChurchwiththesolemnityofbaptism。ThereisanotherconjecturedrawnfromtheceremoniesoftheGentiles,inacertaincasethatrarelyhappens:andthatis,whenamanthatwasthoughtdeadchancedtorecover,othermenmadescrupletoconversewithhim,astheywoulddotoconversewithaghost,unlesshewerereceivedagainintothenumberofmenbywashing,aschildrennewbornwerewashedfromtheuncleannessoftheirnativity,whichwasakindofnewbirth。ThisceremonyoftheGreeks,inthetimethatJudaeawasunderthedominionofAlexanderandtheGreekshissuccessors,mayprobablyenoughhavecreptintothereligionoftheJews。ButseeingitisnotlikelyourSaviourwouldcountenanceaheathenrite,itismostlikelyitproceededfromthelegalceremonyofwashingafterleprosy。Andfortheothersacrament,ofeatingthePaschalLamb,itismanifestlyimitatedinthesacramentoftheLord’sSupper;inwhichthebreakingofthebreadandthepouringoutofthewinedokeepinmemoryourdeliverancefromthemiseryofsinbyChrist’sPassion,astheeatingofthePaschalLambkeptinmemorythedeliveranceoftheJewsoutofthebondageofEgypt。SeeingthereforetheauthorityofMoseswasbutsubordinate,andhebutalieutenanttoGod,itfolloweththatChrist,whoseauthority,asman,wastobelikethatofMoses,wasnomorebutsubordinatetotheauthorityofhisFather。Thesameismoreexpresslysignifiedbythatthatheteachethustopray,“OurFather,letthykingdomcome“;and,“Forthineisthekingdom,thepower,andtheglory“;andbythatitissaidthat“HeshallcomeinthegloryofhisFather“;andbythatwhichSt。Paulsaith,“thencomeththeend,whenheshallhavedeliveredupthekingdomtoGod,eventheFather“;*andbymanyothermostexpressplaces。

  OurSaviourtherefore,bothinteachingandreigning,representeth,asMosesdid,thepersonGod;whichGodfromthattimeforward,butnotbefore,iscalledtheFather;and,beingstilloneandthesamesubstance,isonepersonasrepresentedbyMoses,andanotherpersonasrepresentedbyHisSontheChrist。Forpersonbeingarelativetoarepresenter,itisconsequenttopluralityofrepresentersthattherebeapluralityofpersons,thoughofoneandthesamesubstance。

  FORtheunderstandingofpowerecclesiastical,whatandinwhomitis,wearetodistinguishthetimefromtheascensionofourSaviourintotwoparts;onebeforetheconversionofkingsandmenenduedwithsovereigncivilpower;theotheraftertheirconversion。ForitwaslongaftertheascensionbeforeanykingorcivilsovereignembracedandpubliclyallowedtheteachingofChristianreligion。

  Andforthetimebetween,itismanifestthatthepowerecclesiasticalwasintheApostles;andaftertheminsuchaswerebythemordainedtopreachthegospel,andtoconvertmentoChristianity;andtodirectthemthatwereconvertedinthewayofsalvation;andafterthesethepowerwasdeliveredagaintoothersbytheseordained,andthiswasdonebyimpositionofhandsuponsuchaswereordained;bywhichwassignifiedthegivingoftheHolySpirit,orSpiritofGod,tothosewhomtheyordainedministersofGod,toadvanceHiskingdom。SothatimpositionofhandswasnothingelsebutthesealoftheircommissiontopreachChristandteachhisdoctrine;andthegivingoftheHolyGhostbythatceremonyofimpositionofhandswasanimitationofthatwhichMosesdid。ForMosesusedthesameceremonytohisministerJoshua,asweread,Deuteronomy,34。9,“AndJoshuathesonofNunwasfullofthespiritofwisdom;forMoseshadlaidhishandsuponhim。“OurSaviourthereforebetweenhisresurrectionandascensiongavehisspirittotheApostles;first,bybreathingonthem,andsaying,“ReceiveyetheHolySpirit“;*andafterhisascensionbysendingdownuponthema“mightywind,andcloventonguesoffire“;*2andnotbyimpositionofhands;asneitherdidGodlayHishandsonMoses:andhisApostlesafterwardtransmittedthesamespiritbyimpositionofhands,asMosesdidtoJoshua。SothatitismanifestherebyinwhomthepowerecclesiasticalcontinuallyremainedinthosefirsttimeswheretherewasnotanyChristianCommonwealth;namely,inthemthatreceivedthesamefromtheApostles,bysuccessivelayingonofhands。

  HerewehavethepersonofGodbornnowthethirdtime。ForMosesandthehighpriestswereGod’srepresentativeintheOldTestament;

  andourSaviourhimself,asman,duringhisabodeonearth:sotheHolyGhost,thatistosay,theApostlesandtheirsuccessors,intheofficeofpreachingandteaching,thathadreceivedtheHolySpirit,haverepresentedhimeversince。ButapersonasIhaveshownbefore,Chapterthirteenishethatisrepresented,asofasheisrepresented;andthereforeGod,whohasbeenrepresentedthatis,personatedthrice,mayproperlyenoughbesaidtobethreepersons;

  thoughneitherthewordPersonnorTrinitybeascribedtohimintheBible。St。Johnindeedsaith,“Therebethreethatbearwitnessinheaven,theFather,theWord,andtheHolySpirit;andthesethreeareone“:*butthisdisagreethnot,butaccordethfitlywiththreepersonsinthepropersignificationofpersons;whichisthatwhichisrepresentedbyanother。ForsoGodtheFather,asrepresentedbyMoses,isoneperson;andasrepresentedbyHisSon,anotherperson;

  andasrepresentedbytheApostles,andbythedoctorsthattaughtbyauthorityfromthemderived,isathirdperson;andyeteverypersonhereisthepersonofoneandthesameGod。Butamanmayhereaskwhatitwaswhereofthesethreeborewitness。St。Johnthereforetellsusthattheybearwitnessthat“GodhathgivenuseternallifeinHisSon。“Again,ifitshouldbeaskedwhereinthattestimonyappeareth,theansweriseasy;forHehathtestifiedthesamebythemiraclesHewrought,firstbyMoses;secondly,byHisSonhimself;andlastlybyHisApostlesthathadreceivedtheHolySpirit;allwhichintheirtimesrepresentedthepersonofGod,andeitherprophesiedorpreachedJesusChrist。AndasfortheApostles,itwasthecharacteroftheapostleship,inthetwelvefirstandgreatApostles,tobearwitnessofhisresurrection,asappearethexpresslywhereSt。Peter,whenanewApostlewastobechosenintheplaceofJudasIscariot,useththesewords,“OfthesemenwhichhavecompaniedwithusallthetimethattheLordJesuswentinandoutamongstus,beginningatthebaptismofJohn,untothatsamedaythathewastakenupfromus,mustonebeordainedtobeawitnesswithusofhisresurrection“:*2whichwordsinterpretthe“bearingofwitness“mentionedbySt。John。ThereisinthesameplacementionedanotherTrinityofwitnessesinearth。Forhesaith,“therearethreethatbearwitnessinearth;theSpirit,andthewater,andtheblood;andthesethreeagreeinone“:*3thatistosay,thegracesofGod’sSpirit,andthetwosacraments,baptismandtheLord’sSupper,whichallagreeinonetestimonytoassuretheconsciencesofbelieversofeternallife;ofwhichtestimonyhesaith,“HethatbelievethontheSonofManhaththewitnessinhimself。“*4

  InthisTrinityonearth,theunityisnotofthething;forthespirit,thewater,andthebloodarenotthesamesubstance,thoughtheygivethesametestimony:butintheTrinityofheaven,thepersonsarethepersonsofoneandthesameGod,thoughrepresentedinthreedifferenttimesandoccasions。Toconclude,thedoctrineoftheTrinity,asfarascanbegathereddirectlyfromtheScripture,isinsubstancethis:thatGod,whoisalwaysoneandthesame,wasthepersonrepresentedbyMoses;thepersonrepresentedbyhisSonincarnate;andthepersonrepresentedbytheApostles。AsrepresentedbytheApostles,theHolySpiritbywhichtheyspokeisGod;asrepresentedbyHisSon,thatwasGodandman,theSonisthatGod;asrepresentedbyMosesandthehighpriests,theFather,thatistosay,theFatherofourLordJesusChrist,isthatGod:fromwhencewemaygatherthereasonthosenamesFather,Son,andHolySpirit,inthesignificationofthegodhead,areneverusedintheOldTestament:fortheyarepersons,thatis,theyhavetheirnamesfromrepresenting;whichcouldnotbetilldiversemenhadrepresentedGod’spersoninrulingorindirectingunderHim。

  ThusweseehowthepowerecclesiasticalwasleftbyourSaviourtotheApostles;andhowtheyweretotheendtheymightthebetterexercisethatpowerenduedwiththeHolySpirit,whichisthereforecalledsometimesintheNewTestamentparacletus,whichsignifiethanassister,oronecalledtoforhelp,thoughitbecommonlytranslatedacomforter。Letusnowconsiderthepoweritself,whatitwas,andoverwhom。

  CardinalBellarmine,inhisthirdgeneralcontroversy,hathhandledagreatmanyquestionsconcerningtheecclesiasticalpowerofthePopeofRome,andbeginswiththis,whetheritoughttobemonarchical,aristocratical,ordemocratical。Allwhichsortsofpoweraresovereignandcoercive。IfnowitshouldappearthatthereisnocoercivepowerleftthembyourSaviour,butonlyapowertoproclaimthekingdomofChrist,andtopersuadementosubmitthemselvesthereunto;and,bypreceptsandgoodcounsel,toteachthemthathavesubmittedwhattheyaretodo,thattheymaybereceivedintothekingdomofGodwhenitcomes;andthattheApostles,andotherministersoftheGospel,areourschoolmasters,andnotourcommanders,andtheirpreceptsnotlaws,butwholesomecounsels;

  thenwereallthatdisputeinvain。

  Ihaveshownalready,inthelastchapter,thatthekingdomofChristisnotofthisworld:thereforeneithercanhisministers,unlesstheybekings,requireobedienceinhisname。ForiftheSupremeKinghavenothisregalpowerinthisworld;bywhatauthoritycanobedienceberequiredtohisofficers?“AsmyFathersentme,“

  sosaithourSaviour,“Isendyou。“*ButourSaviourwassenttopersuadetheJewstoreturnto,andtoinvitetheGentilestoreceive,thekingdomofhisFather,andnottoreigninmajesty,nonotashisFather’slieutenanttillthedayofjudgement。
