spiritedmen,hadresolvedonrescuingthekingatanycost,duringhisridetotheplaceofexecution。Theutmostprecautionshadbeentakentorenderthisimpossible。ThroughthedenseranksoftheNationalGuard,whichto-daywascomposedofmeresans-culottes,theraging,bloodthirstymenofthesuburbsdrovethecarriageinwhichwastheking,followedandescortedbyNationalGuardsmenonhorseback。Thewindowswereallclosedandthecurtainsdrawninthehousesbywhichtheprocessionpassed;butbehindthosecurtainedwindowsitisprobablethatpeoplewereupontheirkneesprayingfortheunhappymanwhowasnowonhiswaytothescaffold,andwhowasonceKingofFrance。
Allatoncetherearoseamovementinthisdreadfulhedgeofarmedmen,throughwhichthecarriagewaspassing。Twoyoungmencried:
