  “Thetruthis,ma’am,“saidMrs。Grant,pretendingtowhisperacrossthetabletoMrs。Norris,“thatDr。Granthardlyknowswhatthenaturaltasteofourapricotis:

  heisscarcelyeverindulgedwithone,foritissovaluableafruit;withalittleassistance,andoursissucharemarkablylarge,fairsort,thatwhatwithearlytartsandpreserves,mycookcontrivestogetthemall。“

  Mrs。Norris,whohadbeguntoredden,wasappeased;

  and,foralittlewhile,othersubjectstookplaceoftheimprovementsofSotherton。Dr。GrantandMrs。Norriswereseldomgoodfriends;theiracquaintancehadbegunindilapidations,andtheirhabitsweretotallydissimilar。
