  Butherecamethetrouble。Thebulkofthetribe,whichwaslargeandpowerful,didnotsharetheirchief’sviews。Forinstance,hisuncle,Alulu,theheadrain-makerandwitch-doctor,differedfromthemveryemphatically。HewasshrewdenoughtoseethatthetriumphofChristianitymeanthisdestruction,alsotheabandonmentofalltheirancientcustoms。Heharanguedthetribeinsecret,askingthemiftheywishedtobringuponthemselvesthevengeanceoftheirancestralandotherspiritsandtogothroughtheirdaysasthepossessorsofonlyonemiserablewife,questionstowhichtheyansweredthatemphaticallytheydidnot。Sothetribewasrentintwo,andbyfarthesmallerhalfclungtoJaga,towhomthedim,turbulentheathenthousandsbeneathhisrulerenderedbutalipservice。
