Butherecamethetrouble。Thebulkofthetribe，whichwaslargeandpowerful，didnotsharetheirchief’sviews。Forinstance，hisuncle，Alulu，theheadrain-makerandwitch-doctor，differedfromthemveryemphatically。HewasshrewdenoughtoseethatthetriumphofChristianitymeanthisdestruction，alsotheabandonmentofalltheirancientcustoms。Heharanguedthetribeinsecret，askingthemiftheywishedtobringuponthemselvesthevengeanceoftheirancestralandotherspiritsandtogothroughtheirdaysasthepossessorsofonlyonemiserablewife，questionstowhichtheyansweredthatemphaticallytheydidnot。Sothetribewasrentintwo，andbyfarthesmallerhalfclungtoJaga，towhomthedim，turbulentheathenthousandsbeneathhisrulerenderedbutalipservice。
