  Mr。Dacreeyedhiscompanioncovertlyastheyprogressed。HisGraceofDatchetappearedtohavesomefreshcauseforuneasiness。

  Allatoncehegaveitutterance,inatoneofvoicewhichwasextremelysomber:

  “Ivor,doyouthinkthatscoundrelwilldaretoplaymefalse?“

  “Ithink,“murmuredMr。Dacre,“thathehasdaredtoplayyouprettyfalsealready。“
