  Iwasmuchstartledbythisproposal,andinclinedtothinkitatrap;butfurtherconsiderationdispelledmyfears。Theinnkeeperhadheldnoparleywithanyonesavehisguardsandmyselfsincehisarrest,andcouldneitherhavewarnedhisaccomplices,noracquaintedthemwithanydesigntheexecutionofwhichshoulddependonhisconfessiontome。Ithereforeacceptedhisterms——

  withaprivatereservationthatIshouldhavehelpathand——andbeforedaybreaknextmorningleftRosny,whichIhadonlyseenbytorchlight,withmyprisonerandaselectbodyofSwiss。WeenteredParisintheafternooninthreeparties,withaslittleparadeaspossible,andwentstraighttotheArsenal,whence,assoonaseveningfell,IhurriedwithonlytwoarmedattendantstotheLouvre。
