  WhileUrsulawasplayingvariationsonWeber’s“LastThought“tohergodfather,aplotwashatchingintheMinoret-Levraults’dining-roomwhichwasdestinedtohavealastingeffectontheeventsofthisdrama。Thebreakfast,noisyasallprovincialbreakfastsare,andenlivenedbyexcellentwinesbroughttoNemoursbythecanaleitherfromBurgundyorTouraine,lastedmorethantwohours。Zeliehadsentforoysters,salt-waterfish,andothergastronomicaldelicaciestodohonortoDesire’sreturn。Thedining-room,inthecenterofwhicharoundtableofferedamostappetizingsight,waslikethehallofaninn。Contentwiththesizeofherkitchensandoffices,Zeliehadbuiltapavilionforthefamilybetweenthevastcourtyardandagardenplantedwithvegetablesandfulloffruit-trees。Everythingaboutthepremiseswassolidandplain。TheexampleofLevrault-
