  andthen,incompliancewiththeorderofthedeterminedchief,butnotbeforeithadagainbeenangrilyrepeated,hewithdrewtoadistance。

  Inowperceived,withnosmalldegreeofapprehension,thesamesavageexpressioninthecountenancesofthenativeswhichhadstartledmeduringthesceneattheTi。TheyglancedtheireyessuspiciouslyfromMarnootome,asifdistrustingthenatureofanintercoursecarriedon,asitwas,inalanguagetheycouldnotunderstand,andtheyseemedtoharbourthebeliefthatalreadywehadconcertedmeasurescalculatedtoeludetheirvigilance。

  Thelivelycountenancesofthesepeoplearewonderfullyindicativeoftheemotionsofthesoul,andtheimperfectionsoftheirorallanguagearemorethancompensatedforbythenervouseloquenceoftheirlooksandgestures。Icouldplainlytrace,ineveryvaryingexpressionoftheirfaces,allthosepassionswhichhadbeenthusunexpectedlyarousedintheirbosoms。

  Itrequirednoreflectiontoconvinceme,fromwhatwasgoingon,thattheinjunctionofMarnoowasnottoberashlyslighted;andaccordingly,greataswastheefforttosuppressmyfeelings,I

  THEknowledgeIhadnowobtainedastotheintentionofthesavagesdeeplyaffectedme。

  Marnoo,Iperceived,wasamanwho,byreasonofhissuperioracquirements,andtheknowledgehepossessedoftheeventswhichweretakingplaceinthedifferentbaysoftheisland,washeldinnolittleestimationbytheinhabitantsofthevalley。Hehadbeenreceivedwiththemostcordialwelcomeandrespect。Thenativeshadhungupontheaccentsofhisvoice,andhadmanifestedthehighestgratificationatbeingindividuallynoticedbyhim。Andyet,despiteallthis,afewwordsurgedinmybehalf,withtheintentofobtainingmyreleasefromcaptivity,hadsufficednotonlytobanishallharmonyandgood-will,but,ifIcouldbelievewhathetoldme,hadgonenightoendangerhisownpersonalsafety。
