  INthecourseofthefewdaysTobyhadrecoveredfromtheeffectsofhisadventurewiththeHapparwarriors;thewoundonhisheadrapidlyhealingunderthevegetabletreatmentofthegoodTinor。Lessfortunatethanmycompanion,however,Istillcontinuedtolanguishunderacomplaint,theoriginandnatureofwhichwerestillamystery。CutoffasIwasfromallintercoursewiththeworld,andfeelingtheinefficacyofanythingthenativescoulddotorelieveme;knowing,too,thatsolongasIremainedinmypresentconditionitwouldbeimpossibleformetoleavethevalley,whateveropportunitymightpresentitself;andapprehensivethaterelongwemightbeexposedtosomecapriceonthepartoftheislanders,Inowgaveupallhopesofrecovery,andbecameapreytothemostgloomythoughts。Adeepdejectionfelluponme,whichneitherthefriendlyremonstrancesofmycompanion,thedevotedattentionsofKory-Kory,norallthesoothinginfluencesofFayaway,couldremove。
