  Afterawhilethegrouparoundusgraduallydispersed,andwewereleftaboutmidnightasweconjecturedwiththosewhoappearedtobepermanentresidentsofthehouse。Theseindividualsnowprovideduswithfreshmatstolieupon,covereduswithseveralfoldsoftappa,andthenextinguishingthetapersthathadbeenburning,threwthemselvesdownbesideus,andafteralittledesultoryconversationweresoonsoundasleep。

  Whatmightnotbeourfearfuldestiny?Tobesure,asyet,wehadbeentreatedwithnoviolence;nay,hadbeenevenkindlyandhospitablyentertained。Butwhatdependencecouldbeplacedupontheficklepassionswhichswaythebosomofasavage?Hisinconstancyandtreacheryareproverbial。Mightitnotbethat,beneaththesefairappearances,theislanderscoveredsomeperfidiousdesign,andthattheirfriendlyreceptionofusmightonlyprecedesomehorriblecatastrophe?Howstronglydidtheseforebodingsspringupinmymind,asIlayrestlesslyuponacouchofmats,surroundedbythedimly-revealedformsofthosewhomIsogreatlydreaded。

  Fromtheexcitementofthesefearfulthoughts,Isank,towardsmorning,intoanuneasyslumber;andonawaking,withastart,inthemidstofanappallingdream,lookedupintotheeagercountenancesofanumberofthenatives,whowerebendingoverme。

  Itwasbroadday;andthehousewasnearlyfilledwithyoungfemales,fancifullydecoratedwithflowers,whogazeduponmeasI

  Theselivelyyoungladieswereatthesametimewonderfullypoliteandhumane;fanningasidetheinsectsthatoccasionallylightedonourbrows;presentinguswithfood;andcompassionatelyregardingmeinthemidstofmyafflictions。Butinspiteofalltheirblandishments,myfeelingsofproprietywereexceedinglyshocked,forIcouldnotbutconsiderthemashavingoversteppedtheduelimitsoffemaledecorum。
