BlackwaterwasnotaunitindesiringvictoryfortheMaitlandMillteam,forthereasonthattheteam’spresentpositionofproudeminenceinthehockeyworldofEasternOntariohadbeenwonbyaseriesofsmashingvictoriesoverlocalandneighbouringrivalteams。Theyhadfirstdisposedofthatsnappysevenoflightninglightweights,thelocalHighSchoolteam,thechampionsintheirownLeague。TheyhadsmashedtheirwaythroughtheMcGinnisFoundrySeveninthreeHomericcontests。ThisvictoryattractedthenoticeoftheBlackwaterBlackEagles,thegayanddashingrepresentativesofBlackwater’smosthighlygildedstratumofsociety,aclever,hard-fighting,never-dyinggroupofathleteswho,summerandwinter,keptthemselvesinperfectform,andwhohadmovedrapidlyoutofobscurityintothedazzlingspotlightofchampionshipovertheirdistrict。ForthesakeofthepracticeinitandinpreparationfortheirgamesintheEasternOntarioHockeyLeague,theytookontheMaitlandMillteam。
